Simultaneous Translation

I offer language excellence and fluid communication through remote or in-person simultaneous translation services (PT<>EN) for companies, institutions, and individuals looking to expand their presence in the national and international markets (meetings, conferences and events).

I have a degree in Language Arts/English from the College at Southeastern (Wake Forest, NC, USA - 2005) and took a specialization course at PUC-RJ in Simultaneous Translation (Conference Interpreter Training), graduating in 2013.

I have over 500 hours of booth experience.

Simultaneous translation, also known as interpreting, can be defined as:

a type of translation produced in real time, under the pressure of restricted time. It is an activity that consists of producing oral speeches or signing, in a given situation and culture, that have a similar meaning and/or effect to previous speeches, spoken in another language and culture, only once. (...)

In simultaneous interpreting, the interpreter starts interpreting the speech as soon as the speaker begins, keeping it up while the original speech continues, to finish interpreting almost at the same time as the speaker. The interpreter therefore delivers the interpretation simultaneously with the original speech (JONES, 2002).

Working in real and restricted time, under stress, in an activity that requires intense concentration, overloads the interpreter's cognitive capacity to such an extent that the quality of their interpretation is maintained for short periods. For this reason, the work is shared by two interpreters, who usually take turns every thirty minutes.

For this type of interpreting to be possible, it is necessary to use suitable equipment, such as a transmitter, receivers, headphones and a soundproof booth.

Simultaneous translation can be carried out in a number of ways, depending on the type of event and the number of participants.

Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) - a service that takes place online, live, through a platform that contains this feature, such as Zoom. Interpreters are placed on a dedicated channel for interpreting the chosen languages, so that meeting participants can tune into the translation channel for the language they wish to hear.
Simultaneous Translation for in-person events (more than 25 participants) - this service takes place in person, usually in an auditorium, lounge or large room so that the participants are comfortable. This type of service requires the installation of a soundproof booth for the event, where the interpreters stay. The sound of the interpreters translating the speech in real time is transmitted to receivers with headphones, so the only thing that participants who want to hear the simultaneous translation have to do is put on the headphones and turn on the receivers.
Simultaneous Translation for in-person events (for up to 25 participants/smaller meetings and colloquia) - a service that takes place in person, usually in meeting rooms or even for field trips, practical courses, and workshops. This type of service requires the use of portable equipment. The interpreters are positioned in a discreet place, but in such a way that they can see and hear each person who is giving a speech at each moment of the event. The interpreters use transmitters that are suitable for this type of situation, so all they have to do is whisper the translation and the microphone picks up the sound without disturbing the meeting. The sound of the interpreters translating the speech in real time is transmitted to receivers with headphones, so the only things that participants who want to hear the simultaneous translation have to do is put on the headphones and turn on the receivers.
Liaison interpreting - Accompanying interpreting is a service that takes place in person, when the client needs to be accompanied and assisted with real-time translation in more informal and/or itinerant situations (guided tours, field trips, meetings and brief, informal conversations, parties, celebrations). In this case, if there are only one or two people who need translation, the modality used is whispered translation, i.e. the interpreter stands next to the person who needs interpretation and discreetly renders the translation in real time, making the event run smoothly (portable equipment can be used if more than two people need translation). If clients want to speak briefly, the interpreter can also translate consecutively (first listen and then speak) for the other people present.

I work with a team of competent colleagues and have a partnership with a studio for online events with a Zoom room available, soundproofing, dedicated internet and technicians present, as well as partners for audiovisual equipment with whom I usually work, who offer soundproof booths, portable equipment, and sound technicians, depending on the event. I travel nationally and internationally and do whatever it takes to offer the best solutions to make your event happen in the languages you need.
